Paanjtan Pak — the five holy names, written in gold leaf on a deep black ground.

An original one-of-one painting, made by hand in my studio in Houston, Texas.

About this piece

At the centre, five names flow together into a single form, with Allah rising above them:

• Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم
• Ali رضي الله عنه
• Fatima رضي الله عنها
• Hassan رضي الله عنه
• Hussain رضي الله عنه

Every letter is laid in real gold leaf, so the names hold a soft metallic sheen and lift and shift as the light in the room changes through the day.

The black background is inspired by the Kiswa, the black silk covering of the Kaaba. Rather than leave the black flat, I painted a raised geometric relief across the whole canvas — interlocking diamond bands filled with more calligraphy, worked in the same black as the ground, the way the Kiswa carries its writing woven into the cloth itself. From across the room you read texture. Step closer and the hidden writing appears. It is a piece that keeps giving something back the longer you live with it.

At 24 by 20 inches this is an intimate size. It suits a hallway, a study, a prayer corner, above a console, or as part of a small grouping on a larger wall.

Care

Dust gently with a dry, soft cloth, following the direction of the relief. Do not use any liquid or cleaning product on the gold leaf. Keep out of direct sunlight, which can dull gold leaf over time.
